Book binding calculations

How do you calculate the spine width of a title?

No. of pp x volume no. x grammage
20,000
= Spine width in mm

What is volume?

It is a measurement of the relative bulk of paper for a given grammage. The higher the volume number the bulkier the stock. The basis is that 10 leaves of 100gsm Volume 10 = 1mm.

The method for measuring the substance of a paper is by weighing one square metre of a single sheet. The gives the substance of the paper in ‘grammes per square metre’ and the figure is consistent whatever the size of the sheet.

Grammes per square metre is abbreviated to: g/m2

and expressed as: gsm
